Not a list decided in advance — only terms the archive, the cards and the routes actually use.
Each entry gives a plain reading, why the word came to exist, and links to where it lives.

신통기Theogony

Hesiod's epic (c. 8th century BC) setting out the birth order of the gods, from Chaos to the twelve Olympians dividing the world.

A family tree of the Greek gods — who bore whom, and who overthrew whom, in order.

카오스Chaos

The state before the world in Greek myth — not a jumble but a yawning gap, an immense emptiness.

Usually translated "chaos", which misleads — Hesiod meant emptiness, not disorder.

Titanomachy

The ten-year war between Zeus's Olympians and Cronus's Titans, whose outcome established the present order of the gods.

The gods had a regime change too — by force, not inheritance.

The Twelve Olympians

The principal gods dwelling on Mount Olympus. Lists vary — Hestia is sometimes dropped so Dionysus can be included.

These gods are neither perfect nor all-knowing — they lie, cheat and take revenge. They simply do not die.

신탁Oracle

A god's answer delivered through a priest, or the place where it is sought. Apollo's oracle at Delphi carried the most authority in Greece.

Closer to an ancient advisory body — cities put questions of war and colonisation to the god.

Hubris

Overreaching pride that trespasses on what belongs to the gods — the recurring trigger of ruin in Greek tragedy.

The moment you shout your own name in triumph is usually where the fall begins.

Catharsis

Aristotle's term in the Poetics for the effect of tragedy: pity and fear aroused and thereby purged.

An answer to why watching misfortune is bearable, even pleasurable: the emotion is undergone safely rather than suppressed.

Cuneiform

The wedge-shaped script pressed into clay tablets with a reed stylus in Mesopotamia.

The oldest surviving story is written in it. Clay does not rot — and the fire that destroyed Nineveh baked the tablets hard.

Utnapishtim

In the Epic of Gilgamesh, the one human who survived the gods' flood in a boat and was granted eternal life for it.

Almost the same story as Noah's ark — and centuries older.

Maieutics

Questioning that leads the other person to find the flaw in their own answer, instead of supplying one.

Not teaching but helping to give birth — Socrates named it after his mother's trade as a midwife.

Aporia

The impasse reached when a dialogue leaves no answerable path. Socratic conversations often end here rather than in a conclusion.

Arriving at "I don't know" is the point, not the failure.

이데아Form / Idea

Plato's perfect, unchanging original standing behind the particular things we perceive.

Every drawn triangle is slightly off, yet we can conceive the perfect one — and Plato says the perfect one is the real one.

Metaphysics

The branch of philosophy dealing with being, substance and cause — what cannot be settled by observation.

It asks what it means for anything to be. The name is an accident — an editor placed these books after the Physics, so they became "after the Physics".

Eudaimonia

The key term of Aristotle's ethics: not momentary pleasure but a whole life lived in full exercise of human capacity.

Translating it as "happiness" misleads — it is closer to a life going well, measured over a lifetime rather than a day.

Ataraxia

Freedom from disturbance — the goal of life for the Epicureans and the sceptics.

Epicureanism was not indulgence: the highest pleasure he named was the absence of pain and anxiety.

Stoicism

A Hellenistic school holding that the cosmos is rationally ordered, and that one should spend effort only on what is within one's control.

Not the abolition of feeling, but not spending feeling on what cannot be changed.

Dialectic

Thinking in which opposites collide and are carried into a higher stage — systematised by Hegel and turned onto matter and history by Marx.

Contradiction is not a malfunction but the engine — nothing moves without collision.

Social Contract

The theory that political power is not given from above but constituted by agreement among people.

The ruler did not descend from above; we set him up — so we can also change him.

Existentialism

The view that humans have no predetermined essence and make themselves through living.

There is no "this is just who you are" — which is freeing, and heavy.

The Absurd

Camus's term for the mismatch between a human demand for meaning and a world that returns none.

Neither the world nor you is broken — the gap between them is. Camus says: live holding that gap.

The Banality of Evil

Hannah Arendt's phrase from the Eichmann trial: enormous evil can be carried out by unremarkable people who fail to think.

Don't look for a monster — the diligent functionary can be the more dangerous figure.

현상학Phenomenology

A method that describes how things appear to consciousness before asking what they really are.

Suspend the verdict and start again from what actually shows up.

The Other

What a subject defines by pushing it outside itself. Beauvoir argued that woman has been constituted as the Other against a male norm.

Fix one thing as the norm and everything else becomes an exception by default.

Dao / The Way

In Laozi and Zhuangzi, the root course by which things become what they are — said to cease being itself the moment it is named.

Closer to: do not force it. Wu wei is not inaction but not going against the grain.

Ren / Humaneness

The central virtue in Confucius: the disposition and capacity to treat another person as a person.

It reduces to: do not do to others what you would not want. The character combines "person" and "two" — it is a matter between two.

Innate Good vs Innate Bad

Mencius held human nature to be originally good; Xunzi held it to be self-interested and in need of shaping by education and ritual.

Trust the person, or restrain them with institutions — the same fork that still divides views on education and punishment.

Yin-Yang and the Five Phases

The East Asian framework explaining the world through two mutually pulling forces and five phases of motion.

An attempt to explain the world by relation and cycle rather than by kinds of stuff — seasons, directions, sounds and organs all under one frame.

Dependent Origination, Non-self, Emptiness

모든 것은 조건에 기대어 일어나며(연기), 그러므로 고정된 자아는 없고(무아), 사물에는 스스로 존재하는 본질이 없다(공).All things arise in dependence (pratītyasamutpāda); therefore no fixed self exists (anātman); and nothing has self-standing essence (śūnyatā).

The self is not a fixed kernel but conditions briefly appearing that way. Not that nothing exists — that nothing exists on its own.

Brahman and Ātman

The Upanishadic teaching that the ultimate ground of the cosmos and the true self of the individual are one.

Dig far enough into yourself and you arrive at the cosmos.

Neo-Confucianism

The Confucian synthesis of Zhu Xi, deriving human duty from cosmic principle and arranging family and state accordingly.

A system that fused explaining the world with ordering it — scholarship and governing ideology at once.

Principle and Material Force

The backbone of Neo-Confucianism: the world explained through principle and the material force in which it is carried.

Something like blueprint and material — except Korean scholars argued for centuries over which one actually moves.

Four Beginnings and Seven Emotions

The debate over whether Mencius's four moral beginnings and the seven ordinary emotions arise from principle or from material force.

Do moral feelings and ordinary feelings share a root? If yes, morality is not special; if no, the difference must be explained.

양명학Wang Yangming Studies

Wang Yangming's Confucianism: principle lies in the mind rather than in external things, and knowing and doing are one.

To know and not act is not yet to know.

Ritual Studies and the Ritual Controversies

관혼상제의 절차를 따지는 학문(예학)과, 왕의 상례에 몇 년 복을 입을 것인가를 두고 벌어진 정치 논쟁(예송).The discipline governing the procedures of capping, marriage, mourning and rites — and the political controversies over how long to mourn a king.

Procedure is a definition of relationship: how long you mourn settles whether a king is the same kind of being as a scholar-official, or a different kind.

소중화Little China

The late-Joseon self-understanding that, with the Ming gone, the orthodoxy of civilisation now resided in Korea.

The last remaining dignity after kneeling to the Qing they called barbarians.

Corrupter of the Teaching

The brand applied in Joseon to a scholar who departed from Zhu Xi's interpretation — one who disorders the teaching.

A scholarly designation used as the justification for a political removal: Yun Hyu was poisoned, Park Sedang stripped of office.

실학Practical Learning

The umbrella name for late-Joseon currents that shifted scholarly focus onto land, institutions and technology.

They looked for the country's problems in institutions and material conditions rather than in morality — some in land, others in technology and trade.

서얼Sons of Concubines

The children of a yangban by a concubine, barred in Joseon from examinations and office regardless of ability.

Birth decided a life. Heo Gyun's line — heaven does not consult family registers when producing talent — was aimed at this.

Purges and Factions

The purges that removed the literati, the factions divided along scholarly lineages, and the abrupt reversals of who held power.

Which scholarly lineage you belonged to was which faction you belonged to — so losing a doctrinal argument could cost office, or a life.

대동The Great Unity

The ideal society described in the Book of Rites: a world without discrimination, where all under heaven belongs to everyone.

The realm is common property. Jeong Yeorip did not name his society the Great Unity Society by accident.

BC · ADBC / AD

The standard way of counting years: BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini, in the year of the Lord), reckoned forward and backward from the presumed year of Christ's birth. BC 800 is therefore about 2,800 years ago — the larger the BC number, the older.

BC counts backwards: 800 BC is followed by 799 BC, down to 1 BC, and the next year is AD 1. There is no year zero — that is the usual stumbling point.

Memoir of a Pilgrimage to the Five Kingdoms of India

The travel record written by the Silla monk Hyecho after journeying through India and Central Asia in 723–727. Originally three volumes, all lost; one abridged scroll, cut at both ends, surfaced at Dunhuang in 1908.

An eyewitness account by someone who actually walked eighth-century India and the Silk Road: where the holy places were ruins he wrote ruins, and where there was no Buddhism he wrote none.

혜초

구법승Dharma-seeking monks

Monks who travelled to India or China to verify the sources of scripture and teaching — Faxian in the fifth century, Xuanzang and Yijing in the seventh, Hyecho in the eighth.

People who distrusted the translation and went to see the original — across desert and ocean, at real risk, and many of them never came back.

Hunminjeongeum

The script created in 1443 and promulgated in 1446, and the name of the book explaining it — literally, the correct sounds for the instruction of the people.

Almost no writing system in history arrives with a published account of its own design.

Haeryebon and Eonhaebon

The Haeryebon is the 1446 commentary in classical Chinese; the Eonhaebon renders its preface and rules into Korean, printed in the new script.

In the Eonhaebon the script explains itself in its own letters — and the most famous sentence in Korean appears there.

Imitating Shapes, Adding Strokes

The design principle of the Korean alphabet: consonants imitate the shape of the speech organs, and a stronger sound takes an added stroke.

The shape of the letter itself encodes phonological information — ㄱ becoming ㅋ with one stroke is not arbitrary.

Initial, Medial, Final

The three-part analysis of a syllable — initial, medial and final — on which Korean spelling is built.

The claim that eight letters suffice for finals is not a shortcut but an accurate observation of Korean final-consonant neutralisation — still valid today.

무의식The Unconscious

The region of mind outside awareness that nonetheless shapes thought and action — placed at the centre of psychoanalysis by Freud.

You may not be the master of your own mind.

Archetype

Jung's term for the basic forms of a collective unconscious shared beyond individual experience, recurring in myth and dream.

One explanation for why the myths of cultures that never met resemble each other.

Magical Realism

A narrative mode that folds the supernatural into everyday reality without remark, named largely from Latin American fiction.

The point is not the magic but the attitude: someone ascends into the sky and nobody is surprised.

Hermeticism (Italian poetry)

A current in 1930s Italian poetry: short, obscure, private images that refuse to explain themselves.

The obscurity was not only aesthetic — under fascism it was also a way of not speaking politically.

Nouveau Roman

The French current of the 1950s–60s that distrusted plot and character, taking perception and memory themselves as its subject.

It starts from a question: memory does not arrive in order, so why must a story be written in order?

The Iceberg Theory

Hemingway's principle: write only the eighth above the water and leave the rest submerged.

Don't state the feeling — record the action and the object, and the reader senses what is underneath.

The Faustian Bargain

Trading away something decisive for greater knowledge or power — named from Goethe's Faust.

Goethe's terms are odd: not a straight sale but a wager that he will never tell a moment to stay. Satisfaction is what loses.

오페라Opera

A stage play carried from start to finish by singing, with an orchestra beneath. Born around 1600 in Florence, from an attempt to revive ancient Greek drama.

Unlike a musical there are no microphones, and even the dialogue is sung: a stage filled to two thousand seats by the unaided voice.

Symphony

A large work for orchestra alone, usually in four movements: fast, slow, dance, fast. Haydn set the frame; Beethoven pushed it to its limit.

Think of it as an hour-long novel: a hero (the theme) appears, suffers, returns. With no words, the story is told in sound alone.

Concerto

A work in which a solo instrument (or a few) and the orchestra take turns and contend: all, solo, all again. That alternation is the skeleton.

Think of a football broadcast: the whole crowd roars (tutti), then one player takes the ball and runs (solo). The birdsong in Vivaldi's Four Seasons is that first solo.

Sonata

A multi-movement work for one or two instruments; the word means "sounded", paired with cantata, "sung". Its first-movement plan — two themes stated, mixed, restored — is also the backbone of symphony and concerto.

A symphony for one piano. Beethoven's Appassionata and Waldstein belong here.

Lied (Art Song)

A poem set to music for voice and piano. Lied, German for "song", became a genre with Schubert in the nineteenth century. The Korean gagok shares the name only.

A three-minute opera. In Erlkönig Schubert makes hoofbeats and the voices of father, child and Erl-king with one piano.

Aria and Recitative

The two kinds of singing in opera. Recitative moves the plot along, half spoken; an aria stops the plot to open out one feeling.

Recitative is dialogue; the aria is the moment someone takes the karaoke mic. A first-time listener may pick out only the arias.

Programme Music

Instrumental music that announces a title or story — "this piece depicts this". Its opposite is absolute music, which depicts nothing.

Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique hands the audience a plot: a jilted artist's opium dream. Music trying to be a film.

Symphonic Poem

A one-movement piece of programme music, invented by Liszt, translating a poem, picture or story into orchestra. Finlandia is the best-known.

If the symphony is a novel, the symphonic poem is a short story: one scene, one mood.

루바토Rubato

Literally "stolen time": playing with the beat pushed and pulled, freely swaying. Chopin's piano is the model.

The left hand keeps the clock; the right hand sways above it. If the left hand sways too, there is nothing left to steal.

Equal Temperament

Tuning that divides the octave into twelve equal steps, so every key sounds the same. Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier is a collection written to show it off.

Tune by Pythagoras's perfect ratios and some keys go sour. Equal temperament makes every step slightly wrong so that nothing is badly wrong: a compromise.

National Schools

Music of the later nineteenth century in which countries outside Germany and Italy drew on their own folk songs, legends and languages: Dvořák, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Grieg.

People who wrote symphonies in the sound of their own country. Dvořák, even in America, listened to spirituals and native song and wrote the New World.

Jeongak and Minsogak

The two great branches of Korean music. Jeongak, "proper music", of court and gentry: slow, restrained, emotion withheld. Minsogak, folk music of entertainers, shamans and farmers: scraped, bent, shaken, emotion pushed to the end.

Music of one country with opposite aesthetics. Listen to the Jongmyo ritual music and pansori side by side and you will hear it.

아악Aak

Court ritual music imported from Song China by King Yejong of Goryeo in 1116. The Confucian shrine music, Munmyo jeryeak, keeps the tradition; extinct in China, it survives only at Seoul's Seonggyungwan.

The sound of a Chinese court from a thousand years ago, surviving in Seoul. Played at the spring and autumn Seokjeon rites, free to attend.

판소리Pansori

A musical drama in which one singer, with one drummer, unfolds a long story in song (sori), speech (aniri) and gesture (ballim). A complete Chunhyangga runs eight hours.

One person who is actor and narrator, one drum, and an audience that joins in. The opposite of Western concert manners.

산조Sanjo

A solo for one instrument and one hourglass drum, climbing from slow rhythm to fast. It began with Kim Chang-jo's gayageum sanjo and spread to geomungo, daegeum, haegeum, ajaeng and piri.

Pansori without words: one instrument carries the long span with no story. The name means "scattered melodies"; it came out of shamanic improvisation.

시나위Sinawi

Music of the shamanic rite in which several instruments each improvise and somehow cohere. There is no fixed score. The root of sanjo and pansori.

Something like a jazz jam session: each player goes his own way, and it fits.

추임새Chuimsae

The calls — "eolssu", "jota", "geureochi" — that the drummer and audience throw into pansori, lifting the mood and giving the singer strength.

Here it is not polite to sit quietly; it is polite to join in. The singer adjusts to the crowd.

정간보Jeongganbo

The notation King Sejong devised around 1447: square cells shaped like the character 井 stacked vertically, each cell one beat, the pitch written inside. The first East Asian notation to show duration.

Where staff notation lays time horizontally, jeongganbo lays it vertically. The principle is the same, and students of Korean music still learn it.

Jongmyo Jeryeak

The music and dance of the royal ancestral rites at Jongmyo shrine. King Sejong composed Botaepyeong and Jeongdaeeop; King Sejo made them the ritual music. Inscribed by UNESCO.

Music played without a break for more than 550 years. You can still see it at Jongmyo on the first Sunday of May.

Nongak and Samulnori

Nongak is farmers' music, going round the village with small gong, large gong, hourglass drum and barrel drum. Samulnori, from 1978, is the same played seated on a stage by four people.

What was done in the yard, brought into the theatre. Today the branch of Korean music that draws the most students.

Renaissance

Rebirth: the movement that began in Italy in the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries and spread through Europe, seeking to revive Greece and Rome. In painting, figures gain weight, stand on the ground, and space opens behind them.

The whole of chapter 1 of the art route, from Giotto to Michelangelo: from God to Man.

Romanticism

The European movement of the late eighteenth to mid-nineteenth century that set feeling, the individual, nature, nation and distance above reason and rule. Schubert and Chopin in music; Géricault and Delacroix in painting.

The age in which "I" steps forward. The hero of a picture is no longer a king or a saint but a woman on a barricade, people on a raft.

Impressionism

The painters who in 1874 refused the Salon and held their own show in Paris, painting outdoors, fast, after the light of a moment: Monet, Renoir, Degas, Pissarro. The name came from a review mocking Monet's Impression, Sunrise.

People who rediscovered, two centuries on, Vermeer's trick of a pearl made from two dots. Up close, paint; step back, light.

원근법Perspective

The method of making depth on a flat surface: parallel lines converge on one vanishing point as they recede. Brunelleschi set the rules in Florence in the 1420s, and Masaccio first "cut a hole in the wall".

A painting on a wall suddenly looks like a room beyond the wall. People reached out to touch it.

Fresco and Tempera

The two techniques before oil. Fresco: pigment laid on wet plaster and set with the wall. Tempera: pigment bound with egg yolk on a wooden panel. Both dry fast and cannot be corrected.

Michelangelo's ceiling and Botticelli's Venus are one and the other. Only as much plaster as a day's work was laid, and it had to be finished that day.

유화Oil Painting

Painting with pigment ground in oil. It dries slowly, can be laid in many thin layers, and can be corrected. Perfected by van Eyck in the fifteenth-century Netherlands.

Van Eyck's mirror, Vermeer's pearl, Rembrandt's dark: all possible only in oil. Light passes through the layers and seems to glow from within.

Salon and Academy

The Academy was the royal art school and painters' body that decided what good painting was; the Salon was its official exhibition, and being hung there decided a painter's livelihood. Modern art begins in 1863 with the Salon des Refusés, a show of the rejected.

Imagine a world with one juried competition, and nowhere to sell if you fail it. Courbet, rejected, built his own pavilion next door.

트로니Tronie

Not a portrait of a particular person but a study of expression, costume and type of face; seventeenth-century Dutch for "face". The Girl with a Pearl Earring is a tronie: nobody knows who she is.

A hired model in an exotic turban, painted as a face study, sold cheaper than a commissioned portrait.

Allegory

Saying an invisible thing with a visible figure: one woman is Liberty, a pair of scales is Justice. Delacroix's woman on the barricade is one.

When a figure in a picture is a word rather than a person. Ask not who she is but what she is.

Court Painter

A painter salaried by a monarch to paint that court's portraits and occasions. Velázquez's Las Meninas, in which he painted himself in front of the Spanish king, shows what the post was.

A painter whose workplace was the palace: secure, but not free to choose the subject. Velázquez made his own picture inside that condition.

Dohwaseo and Hwawon

The Dohwaseo was Joseon's state bureau of painting; hwawon were its professional painters, who made royal portraits, ritual records, maps and pictures of ceremonies. Kim Hong-do, Shin Yun-bok and Jang Seung-eop were hwawon.

Joseon's court painters. Of the middle rank, their painting treated as a craft — and yet most of what we think of as Joseon painting came from their hands.

Jingyeong Sansu

Late-Joseon landscape painted from the actual mountains and rivers of Korea, seen with one's own eyes, instead of the imagined mountains of Chinese painting manuals. Jeong Seon's Inwang after Rain and Complete View of Geumgang are the models.

Jingyeong means true scenery. Jeong Seon painted Inwang after rain from in front of his house.

Pungsokhwa (Genre Painting)

Pictures of ordinary people's daily life rather than kings or saints: a wrestling match, a village school, a washing place, a festival. Kim Hong-do and Shin Yun-bok's late-Joseon genre scenes are the models.

In Kim Hong-do's Wrestling, every face among the toffee-seller and onlookers is different. Nameless people had become the subject.

우상론The Four Idols

Bacon’s fourfold classification of the distortions of understanding: the tribe (biases shared by the species), the cave (one person’s formation), the marketplace (words misused), and the theatre (seductive systems).

What blocks knowledge is not ignorance but what is already in the head. The trouble is not not knowing but knowing wrongly.

The Problem of Induction

That no accumulation of particular observations logically entails a general claim. Raised by Hume, it remains the question that unsettles the justification of science.

That the sun has risen every day so far does not prove it will rise tomorrow. A million white swans prove nothing; one black swan is enough to end the claim.

Falsifiability

The property of being able to state in advance which observation would count the theory as false. Popper made it the line between science and non-science.

To be science it must be built so that it can be wrong. A theory that explains anything is not strong but empty: forbidding nothing, it can never be refuted.

Paradigm and Normal Science

A paradigm is the shared bundle of problems, methods and exemplars of a period; normal science is the work of solving the puzzles left inside that frame without questioning it.

The picture of the scientist always trying to kill his own theory does not match practice. Most of the work is puzzle-solving inside a frame that is not being questioned.

Incommensurability

The claim that successive paradigms use the same words in different senses, never translate completely, and admit no neutral yardstick for ranking them.

Theory-ladenness of Observation

That no observation is neutral: what counts as data and what is discarded as noise has already been settled by the theory in play.

중첩Superposition

That a quantum system before measurement is described as a combination of possible states; measurement yields one of them.

This is not "many realities existing at once." It is the mathematical way of writing the pre-measurement state — not a claim that the cat is actually alive and dead. Schrödinger produced that cat to show how absurd the description becomes when dragged into the everyday world; it was a rebuttal, not a celebration.

Entanglement

A correlation in which two particles are described by one state, so that measuring one fixes the other’s outcome at any distance.

This is not telepathy or destined connection. One decisive fact: it is proven that no signal can be sent through entanglement (the no-communication theorem). It looks like a link, yet not a single word can cross it. Einstein doubted it as "spooky action at a distance"; experiment showed entanglement is real — while the remote signalling he feared remains impossible.

The Uncertainty Principle

That paired quantities like position and momentum cannot both be sharply defined at once: narrow one and the other spreads.

This is not "everything is uncertain." Rather the opposite: exactly how much is undetermined is fixed by an equation — the uncertainty itself obeys a law. And it is a claim about the structure of the world, not about clumsy instruments.

Complementarity

Bohr’s principle that two mutually exclusive descriptions — wave and particle — are both required to state the whole phenomenon; the experiment chosen decides which face shows.

Not a spiritual exercise in enduring contradiction but a precise statement about experimental design: the apparatus that shows light’s wave face differs from the one that shows its particle face, and no single experiment shows both.

The Measurement Problem

That a system described as superposed before measurement yields one value when measured — and the theory does not cleanly say when or how that transition happens.

This is not "consciousness creates reality." Measurement here means physical interaction, not a human gaze — a single photon striking counts, and an unwatched detector measures. The reading on which consciousness causes collapse has been proposed, but it is a minority view, not the mainstream.

Modernity

바로크Baroque

European art and music from roughly 1600 to 1750. From a Portuguese word for a misshapen pearl, and at first a reproach meaning excessive. In painting, a shaft of light falling into darkness; in music, a melody riding on a regularly moving bass.

Pictures lit like a stage with a single spotlight, and music whose left hand moves like a clock. Caravaggio and Rembrandt, Vivaldi and Bach live under one name.

로코코Rococo

Art and interior decoration that began in France in the early eighteenth century. After the Sun King died the court moved into the small drawing rooms of Paris, and painting grew smaller, lighter and brighter: gardens, love, play, pink and gold. The name comes from rocaille, the shell-work of garden grottoes, and was coined in mockery by the revolutionary generation.

If Baroque was blamed for being too much, Rococo was blamed for being too light.
