논쟁 — 사상가들이 갈라선 자리

사상은 혼자 자라지 않습니다. 대개 누군가의 말을 받아치면서 자랍니다. 그래서 한 사람만 읽으면 그가 무엇에 맞서고 있었는지가 보이지 않습니다. Ideas rarely grow alone; mostly they grow by answering someone. Read one thinker in isolation and you cannot see what they were pushing against.

여기 담은 것은 실제로 벌어진 것만입니다. 한쪽이 상대를 이름 대고 반박했거나, 직접 맞붙었거나, 자기가 누구에게 응답하는지 스스로 밝힌 경우입니다. 대립 구도로 묶으면 그럴듯해 보이는 조합은 넣지 않았습니다. Only confrontations that actually took place: one side naming the other, or the two meeting, or a thinker declaring whom he was answering. Pairings that merely look neat as oppositions are not here.
