In 1446 a Korean king published an alphabet together with a full explanation of its design — an almost unheard-of thing in the history of writing systems. The Haeryebon sets out the philosophy behind the script: consonants shaped after the speech organs, vowels built from heaven, earth and human, the whole system grounded in yin-yang and the five phases. It is a linguistics paper, a metaphysical treatise, and a political document at once. Original classical Chinese and a modern Korean rendering are given side by side; the text has been in the public domain for centuries.
