The second half of the jejahae. It sets out the principle by which the eleven medials imitate the three powers — heaven, earth and humanity — and the way the remaining eight medials are derived. The verse summary that follows in the original is omitted here for length; only the prose is given.

In English

The medials number eleven. For ㆍ the tongue is retracted and the sound is deep, corresponding to heaven opening at the first hour; its round shape imitates heaven. For ㅡ the tongue is slightly retracted and the sound is neither deep nor shallow, corresponding to earth opening at the second hour; its flat shape imitates earth. For ㅣ the tongue is not retracted and the sound is shallow, corresponding to humanity coming into being at the third hour; its upright shape imitates a person.

The eight sounds below these are closed in one case and open in the other. ㅗ is as ㆍ but with the mouth rounded; its shape is formed by joining ㆍ and ㅡ, taking the sense of heaven and earth first meeting. ㅏ is as ㆍ but with the mouth open; its shape is formed by joining ㅣ and ㆍ, taking the sense that the operation of heaven and earth issues in things and waits upon humanity to be completed. ㅜ is as ㅡ but with the mouth rounded; its shape joins ㅡ and ㆍ, again taking the sense of heaven and earth first meeting. ㅓ is as ㅡ but with the mouth open; its shape joins ㆍ and ㅣ, again taking the sense that the operation of heaven and earth issues in things and waits upon humanity. ㅛ is as ㅗ but arises from ㅣ; ㅑ is as ㅏ but arises from ㅣ; ㅠ is as ㅜ but arises from ㅣ; ㅕ is as ㅓ but arises from ㅣ.

How marvellous it is: the Correct Sounds have been made, and the principle of all things between heaven and earth is complete in them. This must surely be that heaven opened the mind of a sage king and lent him its hand.

[On the text] Three strokes — a dot, a horizontal, a vertical — and every vowel in the system is a combination of them. It is a genuinely generative design: rather than eleven unrelated symbols, there is a small set of primitives and a rule for combining them, so that a reader who knows the three can work out the rest. The cosmology supplies the justification (heaven round, earth flat, the human upright), but the payoff is structural. Modern Korean writes the dot's descendants as ㅗ ㅏ ㅜ ㅓ with a short stroke, and the underlying logic — where the stroke sits relative to the base line tells you the vowel's quality — still governs the alphabet children learn today.

If you had to explain the world with only three elements, which three?
