The original
The prose portion of the Explanation of the Medials (jungsunghae). It sets out how the medial combines with initial and final to form a syllable, and the rules by which medials themselves combine into diphthongs such as ㅘ and ㅝ.
In English
The medial occupies the centre of the syllable, joining initial and final to complete a sound. The medial of 呑 is ㆍ; ㆍ standing between ㅌ and ㄴ gives 'tan'. The medial of 卽 is ㅡ; ㅡ standing between ㅈ and ㄱ gives 'jeuk'. The medial of 侵 is ㅣ; ㅣ standing between ㅊ and ㅁ gives 'chim'. The same holds for 洪, 覃, 君, 業, 欲, 穰, 戌 and 彆.
As for writing two letters together: ㅗ and ㅏ both issue from ㆍ, and so combine as ㅘ. ㅛ and ㅑ likewise both issue from ㅣ and combine accordingly. ㅜ and ㅓ both issue from ㅡ, and so combine as ㅝ. ㅠ and ㅕ likewise both issue from ㅣ and combine accordingly. Because they issue from the same source and belong to the same class, they may be joined without discord. Single-letter medials combining with ㅣ number ten: ㆎ ㅢ ㅚ ㅐ ㅟ ㅔ and their yotised counterparts, ㅒ and ㅖ among them. Two-letter medials combining with ㅣ number four, including ㅙ and ㅞ. That ㅣ can follow sounds deep or shallow, closed or open alike is because the tongue is extended, the sound shallow, and the mouth easily opened. In this too one may see that humanity participates in the opening of all things and that there is nothing it does not reach.
[On the text] The rule about combination is more than bookkeeping. Two medials may be written together only when they descend from the same base vowel — the system will not let you assemble an arbitrary pair. In modern terms this is vowel harmony, the constraint in Korean by which bright and dark vowels do not mix within a word, stated here as a design rule of the script rather than as an observation about pronunciation. And the note about ㅣ combining freely with everything is a description of a glide: the letter behaves differently from the others because the sound does.
