No physics is joined to philosophy as often as quantum mechanics — and none is joined wrongly as often. This guide clears away the false connections first, then walks to the ones that survive. Some do — more than you might expect.

1. Why is quantum mechanics misused so often?

Taking the authority of physics and leaving the content behind

The pattern repeats: entanglement becomes destined love, superposition becomes infinite possibility, the observer effect becomes "your thoughts create reality." In each case a physics word has been moved to a place opposite or unrelated to its meaning — it is proven that no signal crosses entanglement, superposition describes pre-measurement states rather than celebrating potential, and measurement means physical interaction, not a human gaze.

Why quantum mechanics in particular? Three things converge. Its conclusions really are strange — physicists say so themselves — which makes "strange claim + quantum" sound plausible. Its words circulate without the mathematics: relativity is misused less partly because even E=mc² gives something to hold, while entanglement, superposition and observation float free. And — the most interesting part — the founders themselves spoke in philosophy's language: Bohr put a taijitu on his coat of arms, Heisenberg quoted Plato, Schrödinger read Vedanta. To a degree, they sowed the seeds.

When a claim opens with "according to quantum mechanics," ask: does the claim survive with the word 'quantum' removed? If yes, quantum was decoration; if no, it now owes physics a proof. Most misuses are the first kind. "We are all connected" is a fine sentence — entanglement just doesn't prove it.

This atlas has a particular stake here: we just brought in Popper's falsifiability — the rule that a theory explaining everything is empty, not strong. You cannot hang that rule in one room and say "entanglement is destiny" in the next. It is also why the song on our bench that borrows the image of entanglement is presented as metaphor. A metaphor that knows itself is strong; one posing as fact ruins the poetry and the physics both.

THE QUESTION OF THIS SECTION Why do we fear the uncertain — and rush to dress it in meaning?

2. Buddhism and the quantum — what matches, and what does not

Similar structures, twenty-five centuries apart — what is resemblance evidence of?

The comparison itself has standing. Nāgārjuna's emptiness is not "nothing exists" but "nothing exists by itself" — the logical form of dependent origination, everything existing only in relation. One branch of quantum theory, the relational interpretation, uses nearly the same sentence: a particle's properties are not intrinsic but defined only in interaction with other systems. Carlo Rovelli, its leading physicist, cites Nāgārjuna directly and says the philosophy helped him order his physics. The connection was not invented from the Buddhist side — a physicist walked over.

WHAT MATCHES

Structure. Things holding their properties not intrinsically but in relation — dependent origination and the relational reading share that skeleton. Bohr choosing the taijitu was the same kind of recognition: a structure of opposites constituting each other, met again in his own laboratory.

WHAT DOES NOT

Purpose and method. Dependent origination is an insight aimed at release from suffering, verified in practice; quantum mechanics is mathematics aimed at predicting measurements, verified in experiment. The one did not predict entanglement; the other has nothing to do with liberation. And decisively — Buddhism can be true without quantum mechanics, and quantum mechanics does not prove Buddhism. Each is solid enough to need no warrant from the other.

Then what is the resemblance evidence of? Perhaps of this: that "do things exist by themselves?" is where human inquiry arrives whenever it pushes the world to the end — once by meditation and argument, once by interferometers and equations. When different roads sight the same peak, that is weak evidence the peak is real. It is no evidence about which road is right.

THE QUESTION OF THIS SECTION If an insight of twenty-five centuries ago and an equation of one century ago resemble each other — what is that resemblance evidence of?

3. What survives the clearing — four real connections

The philosophical questions left standing

Uncertainty and Kant. Heisenberg's principle is not "everything is uncertain" but a precise statement that the limit of knowing is inscribed on the knower's side. The line Kant drew by argument — we cannot see past the spectacles — physics drew again by measurement. Same structure, different instrument.

Complementarity and Laozi. Bohr's principle — two contradictory pictures both required — resembles Laozi's being and non-being giving birth to each other, and Bohr himself recognised it, engraving the taijitu on his arms. But keep the order: complementarity came from the laboratory, the resemblance was found afterwards. Analogy, not lineage.

The measurement problem and theory-ladenness. That "what counts as measurement" remains open inside physics is the most dramatic instance of what Kuhn and Haraway said — there is no innocent observation. But keep the layers apart: observation being theory-laden is not observation being magic.

Probability and dice — and the debate to come. Whether the world can be spoken of only in probabilities became the century's greatest scientific argument. Einstein wrote that God does not throw dice; Bohr answered that how we ask fixes what can be answered. They sat in one room and argued for twenty years; that argument is set out on the debates page.

In a world speakable only in probabilities — what do you call certain?

The physics itself — double slits, wave functions, the mathematics of Bell's theorem — belongs to our sibling site, the Science Atlas. Here we dealt only with what people have thought about it.
Quotations render the sense of the original; sayings that survive by recollection (Bohr's "there is no quantum world") are marked as such in the text.
