When the war ended, a palace of the gods was raised on the summit of Olympus, at around 2,918 metres the highest mountain in Greece. The principal gods who live there are usually called the twelve Olympians, though the list varies between versions — Hestia, goddess of the hearth, is sometimes dropped so that Dionysus, god of wine, can be included. Hades, who rules the dead, is normally left out of the twelve because he lives below.
At the top stands Zeus (Jupiter to the Romans), god of sky and thunder and king of the gods. His sister and wife Hera (Juno) is the goddess of marriage and the household, and is portrayed as perpetually tormented by jealousy on account of her unfaithful husband. Then Poseidon of the sea (Neptune); Athena of wisdom and war (Minerva); Apollo of light, prophecy, medicine and music; Artemis of the hunt and the moon (Diana); Aphrodite of beauty (Venus); Ares of war (Mars); Hermes the messenger (Mercury); Hephaestus the smith (Vulcan); and Demeter of grain (Ceres). Each holds a domain and presides over that part of the world and of human affairs.
The Greek gods are peculiar. They are not perfect, all-knowing beings; they are jealous, unfaithful, vengeful and mistaken exactly as humans are. They simply do not die, and their power is overwhelming. These gods made so closely in our own image are both the charm and the core of Greek mythology — in telling stories about gods, people were in fact telling stories about human desire and human flaw. The lineage, symbols and entangled histories of each of these complicated figures are set out separately, card by card, in the companion series A Who's Who of Greek Myth.
【Still with us today】 These gods went up into the sky and became stars and planets. Most of the planets carry their Roman names — Jupiter (Zeus), Neptune (Poseidon), Mars (Ares), Venus (Aphrodite), Mercury (Hermes). The city Athena protected is Athens, and the Parthenon named for her still stands on its hill. The gods are hiding in the days of the week too, in Mars for Tuesday and Mercury for Wednesday in the Romance languages.
