Prometheus and Pandora — stolen fire, and an opened jar

Greek Mythology

Once the age of the Olympians was settled, humans enter the stage. The Titan Prometheus — the name means the one who thinks ahead — is said to have made human beings out of clay, and he cared for what he had made. Zeus, however, was displeased that humans did not serve the gods properly, and eventually took fire away from them. Without fire, humans had to live in cold and darkness, no different from animals.

Prometheus broke the prohibition for their sake. He stole fire from the gods, carried in a hollow fennel stalk, and brought it down to humankind. Fire was not merely warmth: it was cooking, it was metal, it was the symbol of the knowledge that makes civilisation possible at all. Enraged, Zeus imposed a terrible punishment. Prometheus was chained to a rock in the Caucasus at the eastern edge of the world, and every day an eagle came to tear at his liver. Because his body was immortal the liver grew back each night, and the punishment repeated forever — until, much later, the hero Heracles set him free.

Zeus's revenge was aimed at humans as well. He had Hephaestus, the smith god, shape a beautiful woman out of clay, and the other gods each added a gift to complete her — hence her name, Pandora, the woman who received all gifts. Zeus sent her into the human world with a jar (known to later tradition as a box) that she was never to open. Unable to resist her curiosity, Pandora lifted the lid, and every disease and grief and disaster shut inside came pouring out into the world. When she shut it again in alarm, one thing alone remained at the bottom of the jar: hope, elpis. Hesiod himself gives no clear verdict on that ending, and the argument continues — was hope left to us as a consolation, or was it shut away so that we could never reach it?

【Still with us today】 To open Pandora's box has become an idiom for the beginning of an irreversible catastrophe. Prometheus, punished eternally for bringing fire — knowledge — to humankind, appears again and again in literature and art as the emblem of resistance: sacrifice for humanity in defiance of authority. Mary Shelley gave Frankenstein the subtitle 'The Modern Prometheus'.

❓ 마지막 질문 · A QUESTION

Hope stayed in the jar. Was that a mercy, or was it kept from us?
