크레타에서 몰래 자란 제우스는 어른이 되자 아버지를 무너뜨리러 나섰다. 지혜의 여신 메티스의 도움으로 약을 써서, 크로노스가 삼켰던 형과 누이들을 모두 토해내게 만들었다. 헤스티아, 데메테르, 헤라, 하데스, 포세이돈 — 뱃속에서 다 자란 채로 되살아난 이들이 제우스와 힘을 합쳐 아버지 세대에 맞섰다. 올림포스산에 자리 잡은 젊은 신들과, 맞은편 오트리스산의 늙은 티탄들 사이에 전쟁이 벌어졌다. 이것이 티타노마키아(Titanomachia), "티탄들과의 싸움"이다.
전쟁은 무려 10년간 밀고 밀리며 끝나지 않았다. 그때 가이아가 제우스에게 승리의 열쇠를 알려준다 — 우라노스와 크로노스가 타르타로스에 가둬 둔 키클롭스와 헤카톤케이레스를 풀어 네 편으로 삼으라고. 제우스가 그들을 해방시키자, 대장장이 키클롭스 삼형제는 감사의 뜻으로 세 개의 무기를 만들어 바쳤다. 제우스에게는 천둥번개를, 포세이돈에게는 삼지창(트리아이나)을, 하데스에게는 쓰면 모습이 보이지 않게 되는 투구를. 그리고 팔이 백 개인 헤카톤케이레스 삼형제는 한 번에 삼백 개의 바위를 던져 티탄들을 짓눌렀다.
마침내 제우스 세대가 승리했다. 패배한 티탄들은 세상 가장 깊은 감옥 타르타로스에 던져졌고, 헤카톤케이레스가 그 문을 지켰다. 티탄 중 힘이 세던 아틀라스(Atlas)에게는 특별한 벌이 내려졌다 — 세상의 서쪽 끝에서 영원히 하늘을 어깨로 떠받치는 형벌이었다. 승리한 세 형제는 세계를 나눠 가졌다. 제우스는 하늘을, 포세이돈은 바다를, 하데스는 죽은 자들의 지하 세계를 다스리게 되었다. 올림포스 신들의 시대가 이렇게 시작되었다.
【오늘 우리 곁에】 하늘을 짊어진 아틀라스는 "지도책(atlas)"이라는 말을 남겼다 — 옛 지도책 표지에 하늘(또는 지구)을 진 그의 그림이 자주 실렸기 때문이다. 우리가 만들고 있는 이 지도 플랫폼의 이름 ATLAS도 거기서 멀지 않다. 대서양(Atlantic)도 "아틀라스의 바다"라는 뜻이다. 티탄은 거대한 것을 뜻하는 말(타이타닉, 티타늄)로 남았다.
Raised in secret on Crete, Zeus came of age and set out to bring his father down. With the help of Metis, goddess of cunning, he administered a drug that made Cronus vomit up all the brothers and sisters he had swallowed. Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon — brought back fully grown from inside their father — joined Zeus against the older generation. War broke out between the young gods established on Mount Olympus and the old Titans on Mount Othrys facing them. This is the Titanomachy, the war with the Titans.
It dragged on for ten years without resolution. Then Gaia told Zeus where the key to victory lay: release the Cyclopes and Hecatoncheires that Uranus and Cronus had shut in Tartarus, and take them onto your side. When Zeus freed them, the three smith Cyclopes made three weapons in gratitude — the thunderbolt for Zeus, the trident for Poseidon, and for Hades a helmet that makes its wearer invisible. And the three hundred-armed Hecatoncheires hurled three hundred boulders at a time, crushing the Titans.
Zeus's generation won at last. The defeated Titans were thrown into Tartarus, the deepest prison in the world, and the Hecatoncheires were set to guard its gate. Atlas, the strongest of the Titans, received a punishment of his own: to stand at the western edge of the world holding up the sky on his shoulders forever. The three victorious brothers divided the world between them. Zeus took the sky, Poseidon the sea, Hades the underworld of the dead. So began the age of the Olympian gods.
【Still with us today】 Atlas, who carries the sky, gave us the word atlas for a book of maps — old map books often carried a picture of him bearing the heavens, or the globe, on the cover. The name of this map platform is not far from that. The Atlantic is likewise the sea of Atlas. And Titan survives as a word for anything enormous, in Titanic and titanium.
