Lives

The thought that governed late Joseon longest and most deeply was Song Siyeol's. The period cannot be explained without him.

The lineage begins with Kim Jangsaeng. A student of Yi I, he lived at Yeonsan in Chungcheong and established ritual studies — the discipline that investigates the procedures of capping, marriage, mourning and ancestral rites. Why that came to matter so much in the late dynasty is the key question. After the Japanese and Manchu invasions broke the social order, what was needed was a concrete set of norms to rebuild it. The judgement was that a society is held together by procedure rather than by ideology.

Song Siyeol was Kim Jangsaeng's student. Born at Hoedeok in Chungcheong, he became tutor to King Hyojong and the ideological pillar of the projected northern expedition. In later life he stayed at Hwayangdong in Goesan and taught. Exiled to Jeju in the political upheaval of 1689, he was given poison at Jeongeup while being escorted back for interrogation. He was eighty-three.

On the other side stood Heo Mok and Yun Seondo. Heo Mok, leader of the Southerners, opposed Song Siyeol head-on in the ritual controversies; Yun Seondo was a Southerner polemicist based at Haenam and the poet of the Fisherman's Calendar. Attacking the Westerners in the ritual disputes, Yun Seondo was exiled to Samsu in Hamgyeong.

The core of it

Song Siyeol's position is a single sentence: Zhu Xi's interpretation is complete, and the scholar's task is to keep it.

Read only as rigidity, the intensity of it makes no sense. In the Manchu invasion Joseon had knelt to the Qing it called barbarians. The Ming was gone. So where did the civilisation of the Middle Kingdom now reside? Song Siyeol's answer was Joseon — with the Ming vanished, only Joseon carried on that orthodoxy.

That self-understanding is called Little China. And the concrete content of the orthodoxy was Zhu Xi's system. To unsettle Zhu Xi's reading became a matter of unsettling the last dignity Joseon still held, which is exactly why Yun Hyu was branded a corrupter of the teaching.

The northern expedition belongs to the same logic. Whether he genuinely believed the Qing could be attacked is debated, but at minimum it was a declaration that the submission would not be accepted.

Heo Mok's position was different. He sought to return directly to the ancient classics as they stood before Zhu Xi, and in the ritual controversies argued that a king cannot follow the same ritual code as a scholar-official. Within the same Confucianism, where one placed the standard divided people this sharply.

What it did

Why a dispute over mourning garments could shake the state is only intelligible if one understands the standing of ritual studies.

Ritual studies is a discipline of procedure, but the procedure is a definition of relationship. How many years of mourning one person owes another settles what the relationship between them is. So the question of mourning for King Hyojong became the question of whether a king is the same kind of being as a scholar-official, or a different kind.

Song Siyeol's answer was that the ritual code is universal; Heo Mok's was that a king is different. The companion series on the factional era treats this controversy in detail.

Song Siyeol's influence grew after his death rather than diminishing. The Noron took him as their orthodoxy and held power until the end of the dynasty, and he was styled Master Song — the only Korean to receive the honorific attached to Confucius, Mencius and Zhu Xi.

Disputes and assessment

Few figures are assessed so differently.

Critics hold that he suffocated intellectual diversity. He branded Yun Hyu and Yun Jeung corrupters of the teaching, and after his death the long Noron ascendancy hardened scholarship into rigidity. His shielding of Kim Ikhun over a fabricated treason case, which provoked younger officials and split the Noron from the Soron, is cited in the same context.

Defenders stress his situation. With the spiritual foundations of the country broken by two wars, his task was to establish a standard that would not shift. It is also pointed out that on questions of livelihood he was reformist, supporting the extension of the uniform land tax and the rule that a child's slave status followed the mother.

One thing is clear: the standard he set determined the intellectual terrain of the following two centuries. Yun Hyu, Park Sedang, Jeong Jedu, and most of the practical-learning scholars in this series were all wrestling with how to get over the wall he built.

The question it leaves

In an age of crisis, what should one hold onto?

Song Siyeol's answer was a single standard that would not move. That choice gave Joseon a spiritual centre, and simultaneously erased the voices that could have tested it.

Without him, late Joseon thought might have been freer. It might also have been more chaotic. The weight of the heretics in this series comes from the height of the wall he built. Had the wall been lower they would not have paid such a price — but their attempts would not have been so significant either.
