Lives
Yun Hyu was called a prodigy from childhood. In his younger years he associated with Song Siyeol, and there are records of the two acknowledging each other.
The relationship broke when he annotated the Doctrine of the Mean on his own authority. Song Siyeol designated him a bandit who corrupts the teaching. When Yun Hyu took the Southerners' side in the ritual controversies, the antagonism spilled into politics.
When the Southerners came to power early in King Sukjong's reign, Yun Hyu rose to high office. But when they collapsed in the political upheaval of 1680 he went down with them, and was given poison that year. He was sixty-three.
Park Sedang was an official of the Soron line. Withdrawing from office, he lived in seclusion at Seokcheondong in Yangju, farming and writing. At seventy-four his Sabyeonnok caused trouble, he was branded a corrupter of the teaching, stripped of rank, and died that year.
The core of it
The two did the same thing: they tried to read the classics directly, without passing through Zhu Xi's commentary.
In Joseon Neo-Confucianism the standard of interpretation was Zhu Xi. His collected commentaries on the Four Books were the answer key, and a scholar's work was to understand and elaborate on it.
Yun Hyu refused this. He held that the meaning of the classics could not be monopolised by one man. He is reported to have said, in effect: how should Zhu Xi alone know the principle of the world and I not know it? He re-divided and re-glossed the Doctrine of the Mean.
Park Sedang's Sabyeonnok runs the same way. He judged Zhu Xi's readings excessively speculative and drifting from the original sense of the texts. His interest was in actual use, and the same disposition produced his agricultural manual.
Yun Hyu did not stop at scholarship. He argued for actually carrying out the northern expedition against the Qing, proposing war chariots and a household registration system to identify the population, and discussed granary and tax reform.
Why it was fatal
Why should the interpretation of a classic be a capital matter?
Joseon was a state built on Neo-Confucian legitimacy. Zhu Xi's reading was not merely a doctrine but the ground of the system. Rewriting it read as an intention to relay the country's foundations.
The timing made it worse. After submitting to the Qing in the invasions, the Joseon ruling class had held itself together with the conviction that, with the Ming gone, only Joseon carried on the orthodoxy of civilisation. The content of that orthodoxy was Zhu Xi's system. To unsettle Zhu Xi was to unsettle the last dignity the country had.
This is why Song Siyeol was so uncompromising. For him, uniformity in the reading of Zhu Xi was not a scholarly matter but a question of whether a civilisation survived.
Disputes and assessment
Whether Yun Hyu's death should be read purely as suppression of thought is argued.
He was punished as a leading Southerner in the middle of a political overturn, and the charges led with political accusations rather than scholarly ones. Hence the reading that this was the outcome of a power struggle rather than pure intellectual persecution.
But it is equally clear that the brand of corrupter of the teaching was decisive in isolating him politically. A scholarly designation supplied the justification for a political removal. Here again is the fact that learning and politics were not separable in Joseon.
It is also inaccurate to define Yun Hyu as anti-Zhu Xi. He did not reject Zhu Xi; he said that Zhu Xi's reading was not the only answer. He was claiming the freedom to read differently within the Confucian frame, not attempting to leave it.
The question it leaves
What does it mean to read differently in a society where the answer is already fixed?
What Yun Hyu and Park Sedang asked for was not extravagant: that the same book may be interpreted differently, and that such an interpretation may be put forward. By today's standards that is the basic premise of scholarship.
That it required staking a life and a career tells you the temperature of late Joseon intellectual life. And in that temperature, they wrote anyway.
