Life
Jeong Jedu came from a prominent family and belonged to the Soron. From his youth he was drawn to Wang Yangming's teaching, which at that time was a dangerous choice.
In 1709, at sixty-one, he moved to Ganghwa Island — a decision made, it is said, to withdraw from the political centre and concentrate on scholarship. He lived there twenty-seven years teaching students, and died at eighty-eight.
His scholarship carried on through descendants and relatives by marriage. The lineage running through Yi Gwangsa, Yi Geungik, Jeong Dongyu and eventually Yi Geonchang is called the Ganghwa school. Yi Geonchang, who appears in the factional-history series as the author of a study of the parties, stands at the far end of that line.
The core of it
Jeong Jedu did not simply adopt Wang Yangming. He took up the thesis that mind is principle while retaining the concerns of Joseon Neo-Confucianism.
What he held onto in particular was sincerity. He judged that the scholarly world of his day recited and repeated Zhu Xi's words while not actually living by the teaching. This was a critique of the split between word and conduct — of false learning.
Wang's unity of knowing and doing was exactly the tool for that critique. The proposition that to know and not act is not yet to know could be aimed at a reality in which scholarship had become a means of advancement.
He also stressed the true mind, and that concept carried over into the practical bent of the Ganghwa school. Yi Gwangsa's calligraphy, Yi Geungik's evidential historical writing, and Jeong Dongyu's studies of language all came out of this scholarly culture.
What it did
The very way the Ganghwa school existed reveals the character of Joseon intellectual life.
They did not advertise their scholarship. They did not put the name of Wang Yangming's teaching on the front, and they did not circulate their writings widely. It was transmitted as family learning, within a narrow circle connected by blood and marriage.
It continued that way for close to two centuries. This was how a non-orthodox body of thought survived in Joseon — by moving away from the centre, lowering its voice, and being handed down inside a family.
This is the context in which modern scholars such as Bak Eunsik and Jeong Inbo turned their attention to the Ganghwa school. They were looking there for an indigenous critical capacity in Korean thought.
Disputes and assessment
Views differ on the scale and influence of the school.
Some rate it highly as the fruit of Wang Yangming's teaching in Korea; others hold that as a current confined to a few families its effect on Korean intellectual life as a whole was limited.
There is also discussion of whether Jeong Jedu can be regarded as a pure Yangming scholar at all. He attempted an independent synthesis between the two systems, and is hard to classify on either side.
The question it leaves
How does a non-mainstream idea survive?
Jeong Jedu's answer was to withdraw. Rather than confronting the orthodoxy and trying to win, he moved to the periphery of Ganghwa Island and carried on quietly. The contrast with Yun Hyu, who confronted it and died, is exact.
It is hard to say which was right. But by Jeong Jedu's method that body of thought survived two hundred years, and was in the end found by scholars of the modern era.
