Lives
Yi Saek studied at the Yuan imperial academy and, on returning, rebuilt the national academy. Jeong Mongju, Jeong Dojeon, Yi Sungin and Gwon Geun all studied there together — men who would later have each other killed sat under one teacher.
Jeong Mongju was reckoned the finest scholar among them; Yi Saek is said to have called him the founder of Neo-Confucianism in our Eastern land. He was also an able diplomat, serving as envoy to Ming China and to Japan, and bringing home Koreans taken by pirates.
Both men knew what was wrong with Goryeo. Land had concentrated in the hands of the entrenched aristocracy and the treasury was empty. The question was how to fix it.
The core of it
Their position is usually called moderate reformist, and it means this. The institutions must be repaired, but the dynasty itself must be preserved. If subjects set the precedent of replacing a king, what will ground order afterwards? Legitimacy and duty in the Neo-Confucian sense are precisely that ground — so to invoke legitimacy while overturning a dynasty is self-contradictory.
This is why Jeong Mongju could cooperate in part with the land reform pushed by Yi Seonggye's group while refusing to the end to accept dynastic change. Land systems, he held, are alterable; the bond between ruler and subject is not.
What happened
In 1392 Jeong Mongju was killed at Seonjuk Bridge by men sent by Yi Bangwon. Three months after his death, Joseon was founded.
Yi Saek survived but was pushed aside through repeated exile and pardon, and died in 1396; the record shows him exiled to Yeoju in 1391, just before the founding.
What follows is the paradox. Joseon raised up the very man it had killed as the emblem of loyalty. Under King Jungjong he was enshrined in the Confucian shrine. What the new dynasty needed was precisely the norm that a subject does not betray his sovereign — so by honouring a man who died loyal to Goryeo, it taught loyalty to Joseon.
Disputes and assessment
Whether the moderate reformists were conservatives who misread their moment, or men who held to a principle, is an old argument.
One side holds that Goryeo's contradictions were already beyond repair, and that land reform was impossible without dynastic change. The land redistribution law was in fact pushed through by the faction that carried out the change.
The other side stresses that what Jeong Mongju opposed was not reform but a method. What he opposed was the precedent of subjects replacing a king, and that concern was not baseless — the two princes' rebellions early in Joseon are cited in evidence.
The question it leaves
Repair within the system, or replace the system. The question repeats in every age that talks about reform.
Which side would you have taken? Both men agreed the problem was serious. Where they parted was over whether the frame that produced the problem could itself be broken. Break it and you move fast, but you cannot guarantee what comes next; leave it and you are safe, but the problem stays exactly where it is.
