Lives

An Hyang was an official under King Chungnyeol of Goryeo. Travelling to the Yuan capital, he encountered the writings of Zhu Xi and copied them out by hand to bring home; he is said to have brought back a portrait of Zhu Xi as well. He then took Hoeheon as his sobriquet, borrowing a character from Zhu Xi's own — inscribing into his name the idea of privately following a teacher one never met.

Yi Jehyeon belonged to the next generation. At the Hall of Ten Thousand Volumes, established in the Yuan capital by King Chungseon, he mixed with first-rank Yuan scholars including Zhao Mengfu and broadened his learning. During the period of Yuan interference he also took on the diplomatic work of protecting Goryeo's standing as a state, and he wrote history.

The core of it

What the two brought in was less a new philosophy than a new standard.

Until then the dominant thought in Goryeo was Buddhism. Buddhism spoke of individual release, and had comparatively little to say about how a society should be organised. Neo-Confucianism, by contrast, derived human duty from cosmic principle and arranged family and state according to that duty. It was a blueprint that explained the world and arranged it at the same time.

What An Hyang worked hardest at was education. He put his own money into a scholarship endowment used to rebuild the national academy. He understood that ideas travel through people, not through books.

What it did

Why this arrival was decisive becomes clear a century later.

Neo-Confucianism put a weapon into the hands of the newly rising literati of late Goryeo. They now had a language in which to criticise the vast landholdings of the entrenched aristocracy and the economic privileges of the Buddhist monasteries. That criticism came with moral legitimacy, and legitimacy became political power.

It is no accident that the academy founded at Sunheung became the first private academy of Joseon and later received a royal charter. Sunheung was An Hyang's home district. The place where the idea landed became the symbolic starting point of the Joseon literati.

Disputes and assessment

It would be inaccurate to draw this period as an outright victory for Neo-Confucianism.

Yi Jehyeon himself did not reject Buddhism wholesale, and a considerable number of late Goryeo intellectuals held both. Neo-Confucianism was only honed into an ideology that excluded Buddhism in Jeong Dojeon's generation.

The standard claim that An Hyang first introduced Neo-Confucianism has also been questioned, on the grounds that fragmentary transmission preceded him. It is more accurate to treat his role as the point at which serious reception begins, rather than as the first introduction.

The question it leaves

One man copying out a book became, a century later, the intellectual grounds for replacing a dynasty. The spread of ideas involves a lag, and during that lag an idea grows in directions its carrier did not intend.

When An Hyang was copying Zhu Xi, he was not designing the fall of Goryeo. But the standard he brought in was eventually used as the measure by which Goryeo was judged.
