Ten years of fighting had not brought down the walls of Troy. What took the city was not force but a trick, and the man who devised it was Odysseus — the protagonist of the second epic makes his first decisive appearance here.
The Greeks built an enormous wooden horse and hid picked soldiers inside it. The rest of the army pretended to sail away, and concealed themselves behind a nearby island. Waking in the morning, the Trojans found an empty beach and a giant horse. Taken in by the false story that the Greeks had given up and left it as an offering to the gods, they hauled the horse inside the walls as a trophy of victory. The priest Laocoön warned them to fear Greeks even bearing gifts, and no one listened. That night the soldiers came out, opened the gates, and the returning army poured in; Troy burned in a single night.
The Trojan horse is still a living phrase. It means something that looks like a gift on the outside while concealing danger within — which is exactly why malicious software that hides inside an apparently normal program is called a trojan. A deception from three thousand years ago survives in the vocabulary of our computers.
What does archaeology say? At the actual site of Troy, the mound of Hisarlık in present-day Türkiye, excavation has found traces of the city burning and being violently destroyed around 1200 BC, along with heaps of sling stones indicating fierce fighting. So the claims that a city called Troy existed and that it fell in a major war at that period are archaeologically supported. There is no evidence of the horse itself, however, and scholars are careful about whether it was a real device or a poetic image standing for the trick.
【Meanwhile in Korea】 Around 1200 BC, as Troy burned, someone on the southern coast of the Korean peninsula was carving whales and hunting scenes into the rock face at Bangudae in Ulju. On one side of the world a civilisation was being extinguished by war; on the other, people were recording their lives by cutting pictures into stone. Both were ways of telling later generations: we were here.
