The rage of Achilles — what the Iliad is actually about

The Iliad and the Odyssey

The Iliad does not cover the ten-year war from beginning to end. Remarkably, it focuses on a few days in the ninth year — and specifically on one hero's anger. The very first word of the epic is rage.

Achilles, the greatest fighter among the Greeks, quarrels with the commander-in-chief Agamemnon over a prize of war, a captive woman, and is publicly humiliated. In fury he refuses to fight and shuts himself in his tent. With their strongest man gone, the Greeks begin to lose. Unable to watch any longer, Achilles's closest friend Patroclus borrows his armour and goes out to fight in his place — and is killed by Hector, the greatest hero of Troy. With his friend's death, Achilles's rage turns from Agamemnon to Hector. He returns to the field for revenge, kills Hector, and then lashes the body to his chariot and drags it about in desecration.

The end of the Iliad is not a battle scene. It is Hector's aged father Priam, king of Troy, coming alone into the enemy camp in the middle of the night, kneeling before the man who killed his son, and begging for the body. Achilles looks at the old man and sees his own father at home, and the two of them weep together. Then he gives the body back. That is why this three-thousand-year-old poem is great — what it chooses to show at the end is not victory but the moment of facing an enemy as a human being. A song that begins in rage ends in the return of a body.

(The famous wooden horse and the fall of Troy do not appear in the Iliad. The epic ends with Hector's funeral; the horse comes down through later works and through recollection in the Odyssey.)

【Meanwhile in Korea】 In the period when Achilles and Hector were fighting with bronze spears, a characteristic undecorated pottery known as Misong-ri type was being made on the Korean peninsula. The distribution of this handled pottery overlaps with that of the mandolin-shaped dagger, and scholars read the two together as marking the boundary of an early Gojoseon cultural sphere. Unlike Greece, where the names of heroes were carried in song, this period on the peninsula speaks to us only through objects — pottery and bronze, not writing.
