맨 처음에 있었던 것은 카오스(Chaos)였다. 흔히 "혼돈"으로 옮기지만, 헤시오도스가 말한 카오스는 뒤죽박죽 섞인 상태가 아니라 오히려 "텅 빈 틈", 아무것도 없는 거대한 공허에 가깝다. 그 텅 빔에서 몇몇 태초의 존재가 저절로 생겨났다. 가장 중요한 것이 대지의 여신 가이아(Gaia)다. 넓은 가슴 같은 대지, 만물이 그 위에 발 딛고 설 단단한 바탕이었다. 함께 밤(닉스), 어둠(에레보스), 그리고 사랑의 힘 에로스(Eros)도 태어났다 — 이 에로스는 훗날 아프로디테의 아들인 화살 쏘는 큐피드와는 다른, 만물을 결합시키는 근원적인 끌림의 힘이다.
가이아는 홀로 하늘의 신 우라노스(Uranus)를 낳아, 자신을 사방에서 덮는 별 총총한 하늘로 삼았다. 대지가 하늘을 낳아 짝으로 삼은 것이다. 대지(가이아)와 하늘(우라노스)이 맺어지자 그 사이에서 온갖 자식이 태어났다. 열두 명의 거대한 신 티탄(Titan), 이마에 눈이 하나뿐인 대장장이 거인 키클롭스(Cyclops) 삼형제, 그리고 머리 오십에 팔이 백 개 달린 헤카톤케이레스(Hecatoncheir) 삼형제였다.
그런데 아버지 우라노스는 이 자식들을 사랑하지 않았다. 특히 흉측하게 여긴 키클롭스와 헤카톤케이레스를 태어나는 족족 대지의 가장 깊은 곳, 어둠의 감옥 타르타로스(Tartarus)에 처넣었다. 자기 뱃속에 자식들이 갇히는 고통을 견디다 못한 가이아는 결심한다 — 이 폭군 남편을 끌어내려야 한다고. 신화의 첫 번째 권력 다툼이 이렇게 시작된다.
【오늘 우리 곁에】 "카오스"는 이제 물리학과 수학의 핵심 용어(카오스 이론)가 됐고, 일상에서는 "아수라장"을 뜻한다. 가이아는 지구를 하나의 살아있는 생명체로 보는 "가이아 가설"에 이름을 빌려주었다. 하늘을 뜻하는 우라노스는 천왕성(Uranus)이 되었다 — 태양계에서 유일하게 그리스식 이름을 그대로 쓰는 행성이다.
In the very beginning there was Chaos. It is usually rendered as 'chaos' in the sense of disorder, but what Hesiod meant is not a jumbled mixture so much as a yawning gap — an immense emptiness with nothing in it. Out of that emptiness a few primordial beings came into existence of their own accord. The most important is Gaia, the earth: a broad-breasted ground, the solid basis on which everything else would stand. Born with her were Night (Nyx), Darkness (Erebus), and the force of love, Eros — not yet the arrow-shooting Cupid who is later Aphrodite's son, but the fundamental attraction that binds things to one another.
Gaia bore Uranus, the sky, by herself, and made him a starry heaven covering her on every side. The earth produced the sky and took it as her partner. From the union of earth and sky came every kind of offspring: the twelve great Titans; the three Cyclopes, smith-giants with a single eye in the forehead; and the three Hecatoncheires, each with fifty heads and a hundred arms.
But the father, Uranus, did not love these children. The Cyclopes and Hecatoncheires he found especially hideous, and he thrust each of them, as they were born, into the deepest part of the earth — the prison of darkness called Tartarus. Unable to bear the pain of her children confined inside her, Gaia came to a decision: this tyrant husband had to be brought down. So begins the first struggle for power in Greek myth.
【Still with us today】 Chaos is now a central term in physics and mathematics (chaos theory) and an everyday word for a mess. Gaia lent her name to the Gaia hypothesis, which treats the Earth as a single living system. Uranus, the sky, became the planet Uranus — the only planet in the solar system that kept its Greek name rather than taking the Roman one.
