Greek Mythology

Greek mythology is not one book written by one person. It is a vast sea of story that passed through the mouths and hands of a great many people across several centuries. There is therefore no authoritative version — the same goddess is born from sea foam in one telling and as a daughter of Zeus in another. This series follows one of the largest currents in that sea: the framework set down by the poet Hesiod around the eighth century BC, in the Theogony (the birth of the gods) and the Works and Days (the ages of humankind).

What is striking is that one great line runs through all of it — the succession of power between generations. Uranus, the sky god of the beginning, is driven out by his son Cronus; Cronus is in turn driven out by his son Zeus. Grandfather to father to son, three violent handovers: that is the spine of the whole mythology. Onto it are grafted the stories of Prometheus handing fire to humans, of Pandora opening the jar, and of the human ages declining from gold down to iron.

Why do we still tell these stories after three thousand years? Because myth is the oldest attempt to explain what cannot be explained. Why do the seasons turn (Persephone), why do humans suffer (Pandora), why are we not gods (Prometheus) — long before science could answer, people answered with story. And those stories are still alive inside our language and our art. The entries that follow work through it from the primordial darkness onward.

【Still with us today】 We speak Greek myth every day without noticing. Chaos was the name of a primordial being; most of the constellations and the names of the planets come from these gods, Jupiter from Zeus and Neptune from Poseidon. Nike is the goddess of victory, and Amazon and Pandora are both here too — myth has soaked into brand names and ordinary vocabulary alike. After reading this series, you start to see where the familiar names came from.

❓ 마지막 질문 · A QUESTION

When the explanation changes, does the world change too?
