페르세우스는 제우스가 황금비로 변해 청동 탑에 갇힌 다나에에게 다가가 낳은 아들이다. 외할아버지 아크리시오스는 "손자에게 죽는다"는 신탁을 두려워해 갓난 페르세우스와 딸을 궤짝에 넣어 바다에 던졌지만, 궤짝은 세리포스섬에 닿아 페르세우스는 그곳에서 자랐다.
그를 영웅으로 만든 것은 메두사 퇴치다. 어머니를 탐하던 섬의 왕이 그를 없애려 "보면 돌이 되는 괴물 메두사의 머리를 가져오라"는 불가능한 과제를 냈다. 페르세우스는 여러 신의 도움을 받아 — 아테나의 거울 방패, 헤르메스의 날개 샌들, 하데스의 보이지 않는 투구 — 메두사를 직접 보지 않고 방패에 비친 모습만 보며 목을 베는 데 성공했다. 돌아오는 길에는 바다 괴물의 제물이 될 뻔한 공주 안드로메다를 구해 아내로 삼았다. 훗날 그는 원반던지기 시합에서 실수로 던진 원반에 한 노인을 맞혀 죽이는데, 그 노인이 바로 변장한 외할아버지 아크리시오스였다 — 피하려던 신탁이 결국 그대로 이루어진 것이다. 그가 세운 미케네 왕조에서 최고의 영웅 헤라클레스가 나온다.

Perseus was conceived when Zeus came as a shower of gold to Danaë, shut in a bronze tower. Her father Acrisius, afraid of an oracle that said he would be killed by his grandson, put the infant and his mother in a chest and threw it into the sea; the chest came ashore on Seriphos, and Perseus grew up there.
What made him a hero was Medusa. The island's king, who wanted Danaë for himself, set Perseus an impossible task designed to kill him: bring back the head of the monster whose gaze turns people to stone. With help from several gods — Athena's mirrored shield, Hermes's winged sandals, Hades's cap of invisibility — he cut off her head while looking only at her reflection. On the way home he rescued the princess Andromeda, about to be given to a sea monster, and married her. Later, competing in a discus throw, he accidentally struck and killed an old man — his own grandfather Acrisius in disguise. The oracle he had been fleeing came true exactly. From the Mycenaean dynasty Perseus founded came the greatest of the heroes, Heracles.
