Theseus, son of Aegeus of Athens — or of Poseidon — is the representative hero of Athens. Raised in Troezen, he made his name on the road to Athens to find his father by defeating a series of bandits and monsters.
His most famous story is the killing of the Minotaur. Athens at the time was subject to King Minos of Crete and had to send young men and women periodically as offerings to the bull-headed monster. Theseus volunteered as one of them and went to Crete, where Minos's daughter Ariadne fell in love with him and gave him a ball of thread. He unwound it as he went into the labyrinth, killed the monster, and followed the thread back out — Ariadne's thread still means the clue that unravels a complicated problem. But on the voyage home he abandoned the woman who had helped him on Naxos, where Dionysus later found her, and he forgot the agreed signal of a white sail, returning under black. Believing his son dead, his father Aegeus threw himself into the sea, which has been called the Aegean ever since. As king, Theseus unified the scattered villages of Attica and established Athens as a major city.

What it left behind
Ariadne's thread is still used for the clue that unravels a tangled problem. The Ship of Theseus — if every plank is replaced one by one, is it the same ship? — became a famous philosophical problem about identity. And the Aegean is named for the father who threw himself into it.
