Heracles, son of Zeus by the mortal woman Alcmene, is the greatest hero of Greek myth. His name paradoxically means the glory of Hera — the goddess who persecuted him all his life. Born of Zeus's infidelity, he drew Hera's hatred from the cradle, where snakes were sent against him; as an infant he strangled them with his hands.

What decided the shape of his life was the madness Hera put into him. Out of his mind, he killed his wife Megara and his own children. To purge that crime he was sentenced, by the Delphic oracle, to serve Eurystheus, king of Mycenae, and perform twelve labours — from the Nemean lion to Cerberus in the underworld, twelve tasks that looked impossible for human strength. Completing them all is what made him the foremost of heroes.

The end was tragic. His wife Deianeira, trying to hold his love, gave him a robe smeared with the poison of the centaur Nessus; as it ate into his flesh he climbed onto a pyre in unbearable pain and burned himself. His mortal body was destroyed, but the soul that carried the blood of a god rose to the sky and became divine. He was reconciled with Hera at last, married her daughter Hebe and joined the Olympians — the archetype the Greeks loved, in which a human reaches divinity through suffering and labour.

Key stories

The snakes in the cradleHera sent snakes to his cradle, and the infant Heracles strangled one in each hand — the first sign of his superhuman strength.
Madness and atonementDriven mad by Hera's curse he killed his wife and children, and took on the twelve labours set by Eurystheus to purge the crime.
The poisoned robe and the ascentIn agony from the robe Deianeira gave him he burned himself on a pyre, but his soul rose to become a god and he married Hebe.

What it left behind

His Roman name Hercules is the constellation Hercules and the subject of a great deal of art. The Pillars of Heracles are the rocks on either side of the Strait of Gibraltar, and appear on the Spanish flag. A task requiring enormous effort is still called Herculean.
