Persephone, daughter of the grain goddess Demeter and of Zeus, was originally simply Kore, the maiden, a goddess of spring. Her myth is the Greek answer to the question of why the seasons turn.
One day, while she was gathering flowers in a meadow, Hades split the ground open and carried her below. Demeter, bereft, wandered the whole world in grief, and while she grieved every crop on earth withered. Zeus finally intervened — but by then Persephone had eaten a few pomegranate seeds in the underworld, and by the rule that whoever eats the food of the dead is bound to that place, she had to spend part of each year below as Hades's queen and the rest above with her mother. When she returns, Demeter rejoices and the earth flowers, which is spring and summer; when she descends, the earth withers, which is autumn and winter. She thus became a goddess joining two worlds: maiden of spring and ruler of the land of the dead at once.

What it left behind
The reunion and separation of Persephone and Demeter was the core of the Eleusinian Mysteries, which dealt with death and rebirth. Explaining the coming and going of spring as a daughter returning and departing is often held up as the most beautiful example of a natural cycle rendered as a story of love and loss.
