Hestia, eldest child of Cronus and Rhea, was swallowed first and disgorged last, which is why she is called both the eldest and the youngest. She keeps the hearth and the flame of the household; when Apollo and Poseidon proposed marriage, she refused them and swore to Zeus to remain a virgin forever.
She barely appears in the events of the mythology. No quarrels, no love affairs, no revenge — she was instead the flame itself, burning quietly at the centre of every house and every city. In ancient Greece the hearth fire was the life of the household and of the community. When a new colony was founded, fire was carried from the public hearth of the mother city to kindle the new one. She has no spectacular exploits, but she held the most fundamental position in daily life, and the Greeks loved her deeply for it. In some versions she gave up her seat among the twelve Olympians to Dionysus.
Key stories
What it left behind
The priestesses who served her under her Roman name Vesta were the famous Vestal Virgins, charged with never letting Rome's sacred fire go out and bound by a discipline so strict that breaking their vow of chastity meant being buried alive. One of the asteroids is named Vesta.
