Hades, son of Cronus and Rhea, drew the underworld by lot after the Titan war. The land where the souls of the dead gather is named after him. His emblem is the cap the Cyclopes gave him, which makes its wearer invisible — his own name means the unseen one.
Popular culture tends to depict him as a devil, but the Hades of Greek myth is not an evil god. He is a cold and fair administrator who keeps the order of death exactly. Because his domain was dark and frightening, however, Greeks were reluctant to say his name aloud and used euphemisms such as Plouton, the wealthy one — the minerals and grain that come out of the ground were his as well. His most famous myth is the abduction of his niece Persephone to be his wife, which leads directly into the explanation of the seasons.

What it left behind
His Roman name Pluto was given to the dwarf planet discovered in 1930, on the grounds that it suited a dark and distant body. His epithet as the wealthy one also lies behind plutocracy, rule by the rich.
