A monk left Silla around the age of twenty, sailed to India, crossed the five kingdoms and the Pamirs, and reached the Tang frontier four years later — but never went home. His three volumes vanished; twelve centuries on, a truncated scroll surfaced from a sealed cave at Dunhuang. Sixteen stops follow both journeys: the man's, and the book's.

The Memoir survives only as one abridged scroll found at Dunhuang in 1908, missing both ends — so the departure and the homecoming are gone. The first two stops and the last three are therefore reconstructed from other records, not from the text. The locations of South and West India, and whether he reached Persia and Arabia in person, remain disputed; his dates (704–787) are inferred. Coordinates are city-level approximations, and the quotations render the sense of the classical Chinese.

Continue on the map — the Hyecho card. Wonhyo, who turned back, and Huineng, who found it outside letters, stand on the same medieval map: three roads out of one century of East Asian Buddhism.
