Life

Jeong Inhong was Jo Sik's foremost student. Living at Hapcheon, he took up his teacher's spirit of practice exactly.

When the Japanese invasions came he raised a militia at fifty-seven. He fought the Japanese around Hapcheon and Seongju and became the centre of the militia effort in western Gyeongsang — carrying out to the letter the rightness his teacher had taught.

After the war he became leader of the Northerners and took the lead in placing Gwanghaegun on the throne, serving as second and third state councillor in that reign. When the 1623 coup came, he was executed at eighty-eight.

The core of it

Jeong Inhong's thought is less an independent system than the political application of Jo Sik's school.

Two things are central. One is a refusal of learning without practice; he criticised, in harsh terms, a scholarly culture that led with legitimacy and did nothing in reality. The other is absolute defence of his teacher.

In 1611 he submitted a memorial attacking Yi Eonjeok and Yi Hwang, both enshrined in the Confucian shrine, and arguing that his own teacher Jo Sik was no lesser than they. In Joseon, enshrinement was the final certification of scholarly orthodoxy, so this was a demand to reopen the question of orthodoxy itself.

The reaction was severe. Students at the national academy struck his name from their register.

What he did

Jeong Inhong was the practical pillar of the Northerner government. Gwanghaegun's policy of neutrality between Ming and the rising Manchus, and the introduction of the uniform land tax, came out of that administration.

He was also involved in the hard line taken to keep it in power. Northerner hardliners led the removal of Prince Yeongchang and the deposition of Queen Dowager Inmok, and that became the stated justification for the 1623 coup.

After the coup the Northerners disappeared entirely as a political force — the only Joseon faction that never recovered. The Nammyeong school shrank drastically as a scholarly lineage along with it. Jo Sik's collected works were damaged and the associated academies abolished.

Disputes and assessment

Jeong Inhong was recorded as a traitor for the rest of the dynasty. He was rehabilitated only in 1908 — two hundred and eighty-five years later.

Assessments today are divided. One side sees him as the embodiment of a practical Confucianism, and reads his challenge to the shrine list as an attempt against scholarly authoritarianism. The other holds that he turned the entire scholarly world into an enemy out of a personal motive to elevate his teacher, and bears responsibility for the deposition of the queen dowager and the killing of a prince in order to hold power.

What is clear is that his fall did not end as one man's fall. When a school lost politically, its scholarship disappeared with it. It is the most extreme illustration of how tightly learning and politics were fused in Joseon.

The question it leaves

Who decides scholarly authority? Jeong Inhong raised an objection to the state-certified list of the orthodox. In itself that could have been a legitimate question.

But he raised it while holding political power. So it was received not as a scholarly argument but as an exercise of power, and when the power went, the scholarship collapsed with it. His life shows what it costs to push an idea through by political means.

Who decides what counts as orthodox? Why is that question always dangerous?
