Life

Yi I was born at Ojukheon in Gangneung; his mother was Sin Saimdang. He passed a state examination at thirteen and came first nine times, which earned him the epithet of the man who took nine firsts.

He lost his mother at sixteen and went into the Diamond Mountains to study Buddhism. He came back after a little over a year, but that episode followed him all his life as material for attack.

In his later years he founded a study hall at Seokdam in Haeju and raised students there. He died at forty-nine.

The core of it

Where Yi Hwang stressed the activity of principle, Yi I went another way. What moves, he held, is material force, and principle rides upon it. Principle and force are inseparable and yet unmixed — a formulation known as their subtle relation.

The difference looks purely conceptual and is not; it divides in practice. In Yi Hwang's system what matters is cultivating the mind so that principle can show itself. In Yi I's system what matters is the world in which force actually moves — that is, real institutions and real conditions.

So his scholarship turns toward restringing: as one re-strings a zither, worn-out institutions must be reset. He diagnosed Joseon as already entering a period of decline, when the energy of a state breaks.

What he did

The reforms he proposed were concrete.

To correct the abuses of the tribute system he argued for collecting rice instead of local products — an idea later realised as the uniform land tax. He discussed reducing the burden of military service, allowing sons of concubines into office, and easing the slave system.

When the Easterners and Westerners split, he tried to mediate, arguing that both sides had to be held together. He lost the trust of both and was eventually driven into the Westerners. After his death the Westerners made him their scholarly founder, and the Giho lineage begins there.

The famous proposal to raise a hundred thousand soldiers comes from later records, and there is scholarly disagreement about its authenticity and exact content.

Disputes and assessment

Seeing Yi I purely as a reformer, or purely as the origin of a faction, is seeing one side.

Most of his proposals were not adopted in his lifetime. There was resistance from vested interests, but also the political isolation of a man who cast himself as a mediator and was pushed out by both parties.

Meanwhile, after his death, the Noron faction took him as their orthodoxy, and his thought hardened into a far more rigid form than the original. That Song Siyeol's Noron, which insisted on the absolute authority of Zhu Xi, took as its emblem a man who actually thought flexibly is an irony. A thinker does not get to decide what he will be used for after his death.

The question it leaves

Yi I's diagnosis amounted to: fix it before it breaks. But preventive reform of that kind is the hardest thing politically. The crisis is not yet visible, so there is no urgency, while the cost of fixing falls due immediately.

Eight years after his death the Japanese invasions came. His warning was proved right in the worst possible way.

❓ 마지막 질문 · A QUESTION

What actually stops a system that knows it must change?
