Zeus, youngest child of Cronus and Rhea, escaped being swallowed, was raised in secret on Crete, freed his siblings and led the war against the Titans to victory. Afterwards the three brothers drew lots and he took the sky, Poseidon the sea and Hades the underworld; from the summit of Olympus he rules the world of gods and men.

He is a ruler of absolute power and the guardian of order and justice — and simultaneously the most incorrigibly unfaithful god in the mythology. Beyond his wife Hera he had relationships with countless goddesses and mortal women and fathered an uncountable number of children, which provoked Hera's endless jealousy and revenge. Interestingly, that vast web of descent is what stitches the separate branches of the mythology together: most of the younger Olympians and most of the heroes, Heracles and Perseus among them, are his children. As Xenios, the protector of guests, he punished those who mistreated a visitor, which made him the god underpinning the Greek institution of hospitality.

Key stories

The child who was not swallowedHe alone survived, because Rhea handed Cronus a stone in his place. Grown, he freed his siblings and brought down his father's generation.
Metis and the birth of AthenaTold that the child of his first wife Metis would surpass him, he swallowed her — and later Athena burst fully armed from his split skull.
Love and hatred with HeraHe took his sister Hera as his wife and earned her jealousy through unending infidelity. Her revenge fell mainly on his lovers and their children, Heracles above all.

What it left behind

His Roman name Jupiter became the largest planet in the solar system. The festival held in his honour at Olympia is the root of the modern Olympic Games. Thursday comes from the Germanic thunder god Thor, but in the Romance languages — French jeudi and its relatives — it is Jupiter's day.
