우라노스는 대지의 여신 가이아가 홀로 낳은 하늘의 신이다. 어머니이자 아내인 가이아와 결합해 티탄과 거인들을 낳았지만, 자식들을 사랑하지 않았다. 특히 흉측하다 여긴 키클롭스와 헤카톤케이레스를 태어나는 족족 땅속 깊은 감옥 타르타로스에 가두었다.
그 대가는 참혹했다. 자식이 뱃속에 갇혀 고통받던 가이아가 반란을 꾸몄고, 막내아들 크로노스의 낫에 거세당하며 권좌에서 쫓겨났다. 잘려 바다에 던져진 그의 몸에서 이는 거품에서 미의 여신 아프로디테가 태어났다는 이야기가 여기서 비롯된다. 우라노스는 물러나며 예언을 남겼다 — "너 역시 네 자식에게 똑같이 당하리라." 이 저주는 그대로 실현되어, 크로노스도 아들 제우스에게 쫓겨난다.

우라노스는 태양계 행성 천왕성(Uranus)이 되었다 — 로마식(카일루스)이 아니라 그리스식 이름을 그대로 쓰는 유일한 행성이다. 원소 우라늄(uranium)도 이 행성의 발견 직후 그 이름을 따서 붙여졌다.
Uranus is the sky, born of Gaia alone. Joined with her — his mother and his wife — he fathered the Titans and the giants, but he did not love his children. The Cyclopes and Hecatoncheires he found hideous, and as each was born he pushed it down into Tartarus, the deep prison beneath the earth.
The price was severe. Gaia, in pain with her children confined inside her, plotted a rebellion, and Uranus was castrated by the sickle of his youngest son Cronus and driven from the throne. From the foam that rose where the severed parts fell into the sea, the story goes, Aphrodite was born. As he fell, Uranus left a prophecy: you too will suffer exactly this at the hands of your child. The curse came true, and Cronus was in his turn driven out by Zeus.
