레아는 소아시아의 대모신(大母神) 키벨레 신앙과 습합되어 "위대한 어머니(마그나 마테르)"로 로마에서 널리 숭배되었다. 토성의 위성 중 하나(레아)에도 그 이름이 남아 있다.
Rhea is the Titan goddess who, joined with her brother Cronus, bore the six gods who would become the first Olympian generation. And she had to watch her husband swallow each of them as it was born.
Having lost five children, she resolved to save the sixth. Following Gaia's advice she bore Zeus in secret on Crete and hid him there, handing her husband a swaddled stone instead. Nymphs of the island and the Kouretes, armed spirits, are said to have raised the child, masking his crying with the clash of spear on shield. Without this mother's presence of mind there would have been no Zeus and no age of the Olympians. In the mythology she stands for motherhood keeping life alive in the middle of a violent struggle for power.

Rhea merged with the Anatolian mother-goddess Cybele and was widely worshipped in Rome as Magna Mater, the Great Mother. One of Saturn's moons carries her name.
