Achilles, born to the mortal king Peleus and the sea goddess Thetis, is the greatest fighter of the Trojan War. His mother tried to make him immortal by dipping him in the Styx, the river of the dead, but the heel she held him by never touched the water and remained his one weak point — hence the phrase Achilles heel.

His story is the centre of Homer's Iliad. The poem in fact covers not the whole war but the rage of Achilles and its resolution. When the commander Agamemnon strips him of his honour by taking the captive woman Briseis, Achilles withdraws in fury and refuses to fight. The Greeks are driven back without him, and when his close friend Patroclus goes out in his armour and is killed by the Trojan prince Hector, Achilles rises in grief and rage, kills Hector, and drags the body behind his chariot. But when Hector's aged father comes alone at night to beg for the body, Achilles finally receives him in pity — a story that runs from rage to human compassion and stands at the beginning of Western literature. He himself dies later, struck in the heel by an arrow from Paris.

Key stories

The Styx and the heelHis mother dipped him in the Styx to make him immortal, but the heel she held remained untouched by the water and became his only vulnerability.
Rage and HectorStripped of his honour by Agamemnon he withdrew, then rose again at the death of his friend Patroclus and killed Hector. This is the core narrative of the Iliad.

What it left behind

Achilles heel is used worldwide for a single fatal weakness, and the tendon in the human heel is named for him. That the first word of the Iliad is rage says something about Western literature beginning from human emotion.
