Life

Choe Hangi was born in Gaeseong and lived in Hanyang. He never took office.

He is said to have spent his entire fortune buying books. He obtained and read Western works that had arrived by way of Qing China, and ranged widely across astronomy, geography, medicine and mathematics. He is reported to have written more than a thousand volumes, a good many of which do not survive.

He lived in the period when Joseon began to shake. Rule by consort families was at its height, and Western ships were beginning to appear off the coast. A few years after his death, Joseon was forced open.

The core of it

Choe Hangi's system is called the study of material force. It is the final form of the material-force philosophy that began with Seo Gyeongdeok.

He took material force as the ground of the world, but treated that force as an object of observation and verification rather than as a moral principle. A person connects with the force outside through the senses, and the experience so gained accumulates into knowledge. He called this inference — reckoning forward from experience.

The decisive element is his attitude to verification. He held that one must check whether what has been inferred matches reality, and correct it when it does not. This is not awakening to a principle given in advance, but coming to know through experience and revising when wrong.

With that framework he took in Western science. Knowledge such as the rotation of the earth and the working of the human body he translated into the language of his own system and absorbed. He neither rejected things for being Western nor followed them for being Western; he tried to digest them inside his own framework.

What it did

Choe Hangi's attempt occupies a distinctive place in Korean intellectual history.

Where the Northern Learning group proposed learning Qing technology, Choe Hangi tried to reconstruct Western knowledge itself within his own philosophical system. That is not simple reception but translation and synthesis.

But his writings were barely read in his own time. He held no office and had no scholarly lineage, and Joseon was soon swept into the upheavals of the forced opening. He was rediscovered only in the latter half of the twentieth century.

He was the last point Korean thought reached under its own momentum, and that point was cut off without being transmitted to anyone.

Disputes and assessment

Views divide between assessing him as a forerunner of modern scientific thought and holding that he remained within the framework of traditional material-force theory.

His emphasis on verification and correction is clearly empirical. But he did not perform experiments, and he did not take up the mathematical method of Western science. It has been pointed out that his system is still a speculative one.

Regardless of that assessment, one thing is clear. He tried to digest external knowledge in his own language, and in doing so neither discarded his own tradition nor absolutised it.

The series ends here

Six hundred years after An Hyang copied out a book in Yuan China, Choe Hangi died trying to render Western knowledge in terms of material force.

In between are the people this series has covered. Jo Gwangjo was given poison, Jeong Yeorip's line was wiped out, Heo Gyun was dismembered, Yun Hyu was poisoned, Jeong Inhong was executed. Park Sedang was branded a corrupter of the teaching, and Jeong Yagyong spent eighteen years in exile.

Their ideas were not the same. Jeong Dojeon spoke of a country run by ministers, Jo Sik of practice, Jeong Yeorip of a realm without an owner, Heo Gyun of the power of the watchful, Yun Hyu of the freedom to read differently, Jeong Yagyong of power that comes from below.

One thing is common to all of them: they thought outside the fixed answer.

And Joseon could not bear it. So the question this series raises is not only about Joseon. What kind of society can tolerate people who doubt its own foundations? And what is lost when it cannot?

Joseon kept an elaborate system of thought intact for three hundred years. And each time, it removed the voices that could have tested that system. What remained was pure, but the capacity to correct itself went with them.

❓ 마지막 질문 · A QUESTION

Why is 'revise it when it's wrong' such a decisive principle?
