Lives
All three travelled to Qing China. And all three came back and wrote that Joseon had been wrong.
Hong Daeyong went to Beijing with an embassy in 1765. There he made friends among Chinese scholars and saw astronomical instruments. On his return he built a private observatory at his home in Cheonan.
Park Jiwon went in 1780 with the mission to the Qianlong emperor's birthday celebrations. His record of that journey, which reached as far as Rehe, is the Jehol Diary.
Park Jega was the son of a concubine. He entered office when King Jeongjo appointed him a librarian in the royal library. He went to Qing China four times and wrote his treatise on Northern Learning. Implicated in the persecution of 1801, he was exiled to Jongseong in Hamgyeong.
The core of it
The Northern Learning group starts from one uncomfortable fact: the Qing that Joseon despised as barbarians was living better than Joseon.
After the Manchu invasion, Joseon had sustained itself on the conviction that, the Ming having fallen, the orthodoxy of civilisation now passed to Joseon. The Qing was not civilisation but barbarism. Yet those who actually went found solid brick houses, well-made roads, carts in constant use and vigorous commerce.
Park Jega drew the radical conclusion. Usefulness and welfare come first — using tools conveniently and making life fuller. He stressed consumption in particular: wealth is like a well, refilling when you draw from it and drying up when you do not. That inverted the Joseon common sense that thrift is a virtue. Use carts and bricks, he said, and open the sea to trade.
Hong Daeyong went deeper still. In his Dialogue on Mount Uisan he argued that the earth is round and rotates on its own, and that the universe has no centre. If there is no centre, then there is no distinction between the civilised and the barbarian either: wherever each person stands is the centre.
This was not an astronomical theory but the overturning of a worldview — dissolving, by way of cosmology, the very grounds of the civilised-versus-barbarian doctrine Joseon had held for three centuries.
What it did
The position of the group was delicate. They were either from prominent Noron families, as Hong Daeyong and Park Jiwon were, or sons of concubines under King Jeongjo's patronage, like Park Jega and Yi Deongmu. Their lineage differs from the statecraft-oriented practical learning of the Southern line.
Jeongjo opened space for them by appointing men of concubine birth as librarians in the royal library — men who could not otherwise hold office entered a state scholarly institution.
At the same time, Jeongjo took issue with Park Jiwon's prose style in his campaign to correct literary style, holding that the free manner of the Jehol Diary damaged proper classical writing. It is a reminder that a king known as a reformer was conservative where the freedom of ideas was concerned.
Disputes and assessment
Treating the group as forerunners of modern enlightenment thought calls for caution.
What they proposed learning was Qing technology and institutions, not Western political systems. They did not argue for abolishing the status order. Park Jega criticised discrimination against sons of concubines, but that was the problem he had lived, and he did not go on to call for the abolition of slavery.
Analyses also suggest that Hong Daeyong's rotating earth was less a direct adoption of Western astronomy than a reconstruction within the traditional framework of material force.
Still, the dissolution of the civilised-barbarian doctrine is a clear achievement. Relativising the hierarchy of civilisation and barbarism was a rare move in East Asian thought at the time, and it was a conclusion reached independently, before any encounter with Western learning.
The question it leaves
Can you learn from someone you dislike? That was the question this group faced.
Joseon had surrendered to the Qing on humiliating terms. Calling the Qing barbarians was a matter of pride and of identity. And those barbarians were living better.
Park Jega's answer was plain. Even if they are barbarians, what is good must be learned. Refusing to learn out of pride only means falling further behind. It took a hundred and fifty years after the Manchu invasion for that position to be stated.
