Penelope at the loom — waiting is also a kind of heroism

The Iliad and the Odyssey

The Odyssey has a second protagonist as important as the husband fighting at sea: the wife who held out at home for twenty years, Penelope.

A hundred and eight suitors, convinced her husband was dead, pressed her to remarry. Able neither to refuse outright nor simply to stall, Penelope devised a trick. She promised to marry one of them once she had finished weaving a shroud for her father-in-law. Then she wove by day and secretly unpicked the work at night. As long as the cloth was never finished, the marriage could be postponed, and she held out this way for three years. While her husband was escaping danger at sea by cunning, his wife was buying time at home by cunning — this is a couple matched in intelligence.

When Odysseus finally returns disguised as a beggar, he reveals himself by stringing and shooting the bow no one else can bend, and takes his revenge on the suitors. But Penelope does not immediately accept him as her husband. She sets one last test, pretending to instruct a servant to move their bed. Odysseus flares up: that bed cannot be moved, because he built it himself around the trunk of a living olive tree. It was a secret only the real husband could know. Only then does Penelope weep and take him in her arms after twenty years.

The homecoming the Odyssey describes is not simply arriving at the house. The real return is being recognised, and restoring the place and order of the marriage. That a vast epic of war and adventure ends with a story about a marriage bed is precisely where the depth of this poem lies.

【Meanwhile in Korea】 In the period when this account of Odysseus's return to Ithaca was taking final shape, the Shang dynasty in China was declining and the Zhou were rising. The Bronze Age culture of the Korean peninsula was developing its own character within that larger East Asian current, in exchange with its neighbours. Like the story of Odysseus returning home and restoring order, this was an age in which people everywhere were establishing the order of their own societies in their own places.
