Overview — three thousand years of a blind poet's song

The Iliad and the Odyssey

European literature begins with two poems: the Iliad and the Odyssey. Both are traditionally attributed to a poet named Homer — though whether Homer was a single person, whether he was really blind, and even whether he existed at all are none of them settled. What is clear is that around 2,800 years ago, in the eighth century BC, these enormous stories were fixed in writing in Greece, and that for centuries before that they had been carried and sung from memory by travelling poets.

The two epics are the front and back of a single event. The Iliad covers a few days at the end of a war in which a Greek coalition has besieged the city of Troy for ten years — the title itself means the song of Ilios, another name for Troy. The Odyssey covers what happens after the war ends: another ten years of wandering as the hero Odysseus tries to reach his home island of Ithaca. Put together, they make one large story about how people who went off to war fought, and how they came home.

What makes these stories exceptional is that the heroes are not merely strong. They lose their tempers, get their comrades killed over wounded pride, weep from homesickness, and are punished for being too clever. The emotions people felt three thousand years ago are the same as ours, and so the story has been read anew in every era since. Christopher Nolan's film of the Odyssey, arriving in August 2026, is only the most recent link in that very long chain.

【Meanwhile in Korea】 The Trojan War is traditionally dated to around 1200 BC. At that time the Korean peninsula was entering the Bronze Age. Nothing yet looked clearly like the state later called Gojoseon, but people had begun moving enormous stones to build dolmens. Moving stones that size required a chief with the power to command a great many people, which makes the dolmen a signal in itself: this society now had rulers and ranks. While heroes fought with bronze weapons in Greece, bronze and social hierarchy were just beginning to take hold on the peninsula as well.
