Hermes, son of Zeus and the nymph Maia, was born in a cave on Mount Kyllene in Arcadia and is the quickest of the Olympians. The famous story of his precocity has him slipping out of his cradle on the day of his birth, stealing his brother Apollo's cattle, and making the first lyre from a tortoise shell. When Apollo confronted him he made peace by handing over the lyre — which became Apollo's emblem.

He is the herald who carries the will of the gods to humans, and the god who moves across boundaries. In winged sandals he passes freely between sky and earth, and between the world of the living and the world of the dead — conducting the souls of the dead below was part of his work. He is the patron of travellers, merchants and orators, and at the same time presides over the cunning of thieves and liars: a double-sided, quick-moving god. His command of boundaries and communication ran right through Greek daily life.

Key stories

A theft on the day of his birthStill an infant, he slipped from his cradle, stole Apollo's cattle and invented the lyre from a tortoise shell. Caught out, he made peace by giving Apollo the lyre and received the herald's staff in return.
Guide of soulsThe only god able to cross between the living and the dead, he took on the task of conducting souls to the underworld.

What it left behind

Hermeneutics — the discipline of interpreting hidden meaning — takes its name from Hermes, from his role of putting the will of a god into human words. His Roman name Mercury became the planet closest to the sun and fastest in its orbit, and lies behind Wednesday in the Romance languages and behind commerce and merchant. The winged caduceus is now widely used as a medical emblem.

❓ 마지막 질문 · A QUESTION

Why is the one who crosses between worlds always slightly suspect?
