헤파이스토스는 불과 대장간의 신이자, 올림포스에서 유일하게 손으로 일하는 장인 신이다. 다리를 저는 모습으로 그려지는데, 태어날 때부터 그랬거나 혹은 부모의 다툼에 끼어들었다가 제우스가 그를 올림포스에서 내던져 그리 되었다는 이야기가 전한다. 헤라가 남편 없이 혼자 그를 낳았다는 판본도 있다.

헤파이스토스의 로마식 이름 불카누스(Vulcan)에서 "화산(volcano)"이라는 말이 나왔다 — 대장간의 불이 땅속에서 타오른다고 여긴 것이다. 아테네의 아고라에 남아 있는 헤파이스토스 신전은 그리스에서 가장 잘 보존된 신전 가운데 하나다.
Hephaestus is the god of fire and the forge, and the only Olympian who works with his hands. He is depicted lame, either from birth or — in another version — from being flung out of Olympus by Zeus after intervening in a quarrel between his parents. Some accounts have Hera producing him alone, without a father.
His appearance was unimpressive and the other gods mocked him, but what came off his workbench was beyond comparison. The palace of the gods, their weapons and their ornaments all came from his forge — Zeus's thunderbolt, the armour and shield of Achilles, the sun chariot of Helios, and the first woman, Pandora. He was married to Aphrodite, and when she took up with Ares he devised an intelligent revenge: an invisible bronze net that trapped the two lovers in bed and exposed them to the gods. He is the god who proved his place by skill rather than by appearance.
