Some 4,500 years ago, the Mesopotamian city-state of Uruk is said to have had a king named Gilgamesh. His life swelled into legend, was sung, and was finally pressed into clay in cuneiform. What resulted is the oldest work of literature yet found — roughly 1,500 years older than Homer. A king born two-thirds god and one-third man watches his friend die, realises for the first time that he too must die, and sets out for the end of the world to find a way to live forever. The question those people asked 4,500 years ago — why must I die? — is still ours.
